Wesley Housing Welcomes Michael Pruell as its Incoming CFO
Alexandria, VA – September 8, 2025: Wesley Housing is pleased to announce the selection of Michael Pruell as its incoming Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective September 8, 2025. Pruell will succeed longtime CFO Christopher Cherry, who will retire later this year after more than a decade of leadership that strengthened Wesley Housing’s financial foundation and guided the organization through key milestones.
Wesley Housing conducted a national search for this position in partnership with BroadView Talent Partners, an executive search firm known for its success in recruiting and retaining mission-driven leaders in the nonprofit sector.
Pruell brings nearly 20 years of leadership in sophisticated nonprofit audit, tax and financial management advising. He joins Wesley Housing after nearly two decades at AAFCPAs, a premier Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and consulting firm in New England, where he rose through the ranks from entry-level associate to partner. In this role, he specialized in providing audit, tax, and advisory services to community health centers, human and social services organizations, behavioral health providers, community development finance institutions (CDFIs), and community development corporations (CDCs), including their affordable housing and commercial development projects.
Pruell has deep expertise in debt and tax-credit financing critical to affordable housing, including tax-exempt bonds, tax credit-driven programs, specialized bond programs, and traditional financing. He has advised borrowers, lenders, tax credit investors and allocators, and other financial intermediaries from project inception through compliance and deal exit. Pruell is also a specialist in HUD funding and tax credits, including Low-Income Housing, New Markets, and Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits, providing guidance to limited partnerships/limited liability companies throughout every stage of their projects.
“Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of supporting organizations that drive impact in affordable housing and community development,” Pruell said. “I am excited to bring that experience to Wesley Housing and to contribute directly to the organization’s mission of building up individuals and communities through quality affordable housing and resident services.”
“Mike’s proven expertise and strong alignment with Wesley Housing’s mission make him an ideal leader for Wesley Housing as we continue to expand our portfolio and deepen our impact throughout the Commonwealth,” said Wesley Housing’s President and CEO, Kamilah McAfee. “We are thrilled to welcome his leadership as we enter the next chapter of growth.”
Pruell holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Assumption University and is a CPA in Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Massachusetts Society of CPAs, Strength Matters, and the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition. In addition, he serves as a board member for WAY (formerly InnerExplorer).
As CFO, Pruell will oversee all financial planning, implementation, and management at Wesley Housing, ensuring the organization’s long-term financial health through the review and strengthening of business units to make the organization stronger.
